Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) is a heavy haul freight rail company that specializes in the transportation of freight. It is the largest division of Transnet Limited, a public company in South Africa.
Transnet Freight Rail maintains an extensive rail network across South Africa that connects with other rail networks in the sub-Saharan region.
The company offers its freight services through six strategic business units:
- Agriculture & Bulk Liquids: Focuses on transporting grain & Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), petroleum products, chemicals, and fertilizers. Some of the key commodities transported include maize, wheat, timber, petroleum products, gases, sugar, malt, acids and ammonia.
- Containers & Automotive Business: Handles bulk amounts of cars from the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the automotive industry, as well as the main vehicle distribution companies. The containerised freight services serve South Africa’s export, import and domestic traffic.
- Coal: This business unit accounts for over 60% of TFR’s revenue. It serves the domestic coal sector by transporting coal for electricity generation. The unit also serves coal exporters through Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), Maputo ports, Navitrade, Transnet Port Terminal in Richards Bay and Bulk Connection in Durban.
- Iron Ore and Manganese: Dedicated to rail transport of Iron Ore and Manganese Ore to various destinations for domestic and export markets.
- Mineral Mining and Chrome: Focuses on the transportation of magnetite and rock phosphate from Phalaborwa to Richards Bay and Maputo; and chrome, ferrochrome and granite from Rustenburg to Richards Bay.
- Steel and Cement: Serves the steel, lime and cement industries in South Africa. This business unit transports bulk raw materials to steel and cement manufacturing plants and finished products for domestic and export markets.
Transnet Freight Rail’s International Business facilitates rail operations and enables the development of rail corridors to connect and integrate regional countries. It provides strategic links between landlocked countries and ports.
