Background

The Khartoum Tramway (also called TRAM Khartoum Network) is a proposed standard-gauge tramway system that will link the major parts of Khartoum (Khartoum city centre, Omdurman and Bahri) to solve traffic problems and improve mobility in the capital city of Sudan.

Construction

A feasibility study carried out by ETC Transport Consultants GmbH and Schüßler-Plan between 2007 and 2009 proposed a three-stage implementation process:

  • Inauguration: Khartoum – Blue Nile Bridge – Bahri (Line 1) and Omdurman – Salvation Bridge – Khartoum Airport (Line 2) with a total line length of 25 km.
  • Extension: Extending Line 1 and 2 and adding two more lines giving a total line length of 92 km.
  • Completion: 185 km line length after adding four more lines.
