Background
The Northwest Rail Project is a new heavy-haul railway line which will connect Zambia and Angola. It will be implemented by NorthWest Rail Company Limited (NWR), a Zambian rail company which owns the exclusive rights to build, operate and maintain the new railway line from Chingola in the Zambian Copperbelt to the Angolan border. NWR was granted the exclusive rights by the Zambian Government in July 2006.
The project, which will be implemented in two phases, involves the construction of 590 km of Cape gauge rail line.
Phase 1 of the railway project will be 290 km long running from the existing Zambia Railways terminus
Background
Phase 1 of the railway project will be 290 km long running from the existing Zambia Railways terminus at Chingola through to the new Trident mine at Kalumbila. The route will pass through the towns of Lumwana and Solwezi, and connect with the Kansanshi, Lumwana and Kalumbila copper mines.
Phase 2 of the project will involve the construction of a railway line from Kalumbila across north west Zambia to the town of Jimbe on the Zambia-Angola border, where the railway will connect with a branch line from Luacano on the Benguela Railway.
The rail project is estimated to cost $489 million (Phase 1) and $500 million (Phase 2).
The Northwest Rail project is expected to significantly improve freight transport and enhance economic development in the Copperbelt and North west regions of Zambia, which are rich in minerals and agricultural potential.
