Background
The Trans-Kalahari Railway is a proposed 1500-km-long heavy haul railway from Botswana’s Mmamabula coal fields to the Port of Walvis Bay in Namibia.
It is envisioned that the project will be implemented on a Design-Build-Operate-Transfer model.

Recent Developments
Namibia and Botswana officials commissioned the Project Management office in Windhoek (Namibia).
In 2014, the two governments signed a Bilateral Agreement on the development of the 1500-km heavy haul railway, with its associated coal storage, conveying, loading and other ancillary facilities.
The parties also signed a separate Project Management Office Agreement for the establishment of a Project Management Office in Windhoek (Namibia) to run the day to day project office matters.
In 2010, the Governments of the Republics of Namibia and Botswana signed an MoU to facilitate the development of the Trans-Kalahari Railway.
