Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Talgo and the Egyptian National Railways (ENR) signed a contract in April 2019 for the supply of six intercity trainsets that will operate on the Alexandria, Cairo and Aswan rail corridor.
Each trainset is composed of a diesel-electric locomotive, a technical/power car, 13 passenger coaches and one restaurant car.

Under the €126m contract financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Talgo will supply 6 diesel-electric locomotives, 6 power cars, 78 air-conditioned passenger cars (30 first-class and 48 second-class) and 6 restaurant cars.

Talgo will also maintain the trains for 8 years under a maintenance contract valued at €32m.
The Talgo 230 trainsets will carry up to 492 passengers and travel at a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

The trainsets are currently in the production stage with delivery expected to begin in March.
