Background

The Cairo Monorail project is a monorail system that is being constructed in Cairo, Egypt. The project involves the construction of two monorail lines, with the first monorail line extending 54 km from East Cairo to the New Administrative Capital. The second line will be 42 km long connecting 6th of October City to Giza.

A total of 21 stations will be built on the first line of Cairo Monorail while the second line will have 12 stations.

In terms of rolling stock, Cairo Monorail will operate 70 four-car BOMBARDIER INNOVIA Monorail 300 trains. With operating speeds up to 80 km/h, the journey time for the 54-km East Cairo line will be approximately 60 minutes and 42 minutes for the 42-km Giza line. Bombardier’s CITYFLO 650 signalling and automatic train control technology will be used on the two monorail lines. The CITYFLO 650 signalling system is designed to offer driverless train operation (DTO) or unattended train operation (UTO) using moving block technology.
