Background

The Greater Kampala Light Rail Transit project is a proposed light rail transit system aimed at de-congesting traffic in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area (Kampala, Wakiso, Mpigi and Mukono districts). The project, to be implemented in phases, involves the construction of a double-track standard gauge light rail system which will ultimately have a total length of 240 km.

Phase I of the light rail system will be 35 km long comprising four lines radiating from the Kampala station:

  • Kampala – Namanve via Nakawa, Kinawataka, Banda, Kireka and Bweyogerere (12 km)
  • Kampala – Kawempe via City Square, Buganda Road, Wandegeya, Mulago, Kubbiri and Bwaise (9 km).
  • Kampala – Lubowa via Kibuye, Najjanankumbi and Zana (7 km)
  • Kampala – Kyengera via Katwe, Kibuye, Ndeeba, Nalukolongo and Natete (7 km)
