South Korean company Hyundai Rotem has won a US$ 110.1m railway signal modernization project in Egypt. The company will carry out signalling upgrades on the 118-km Nag Hammadi – Luxor railway line as part of the Egypt National Railways Modernization Project (ENRMP).

Hyundai Rotem will supply the signalling for the line including automatic train protection (ATP) and an electronic interlocking system. It will also upgrade other railway facilities including train control, machinery, and power facilities under the three-year contract.

In 2016, the Export-Import Bank of Korea provided US$ 115m in overseas economic development cooperation funds for the ENRMP.

The ENRMP which started in 2009 involves signal modernization and installation of the European Train Control System Level 1 (ETCS L1).
