Wabtec to supply 100 locomotives to Egyptian National Railways

The Egyptian National Railways (ENR) has awarded Wabtec a contract to supply 100 ES30ACi Evolution Series locomotives, as well as an 8-year service agreement to maintain the fleet. The supply contract is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), while the maintenance contract will be funded by the Egyptian Treasury.

The ES30ACi locomotive is a double-cab locomotive delivering best-in-class fuel efficiency, low total cost of ownership, and high performance in high-temperature environments. It will be fitted with a 12-cylinder, 3,300 horsepower (2.4 MW) Evolution Series engine, AC traction technology, individual axle control, and dynamic brakes.

With an axle load of 135 tons, the six-axle locomotives will have a maximum speed of 140 km/h. The locomotives are scheduled for delivery in 2023.

In March this year, Wabtec delivered the last 10 Evolution Series locomotives as part of a contract signed by GE Transportation and ENR in 2017 to deliver 110 locomotives and to renew 81 old units.

ENR has ordered the locomotives to support the continued modernisation of Egypt’s railway network which has seen various agreements and contracts signed for rolling stock supply as well as infrastructure modernisation and expansion.
